I’m a full time college professor and part-time Modesto web designer. At any given time I will have 5 to 10 writing projects that I need to keep track of and complete. For years, I have been searching for a software solution to help me get organized and meet deadlines. For several years, I relied on Evernote for all of my note taking and Microsoft word as my primary writing app. Individually, these apps are great, but they didn’t mesh together in the way I wanted. I needed a single application that could store my research, help me get organized, and then provide powerful tools for writing and editing. Up until a few months ago, I thought I’d never find an app that could do everything I needed. That is, until I discovered Scrivener.
One afternoon, I was sitting in the school’s cafeteria having lunch with a friend from the English department. I was telling him about some research I was having trouble getting ready for publication. As I shared my frustrations, he took out his laptop and showed me the most revolutionary piece of software I’ve ever seen for writers. It’s called Scrivener. And it has transformed the way I research and write.
Scrivener is more than just a word processor — it is an entire writing suite. Its powerful set of tools gives me the freedom to concentrate on writing instead of trying to find where I wrote down an important piece of information. Anyone who has ever written something of substantial length knows the difficulty involved in piecing and re-piecing all of the parts together until they come together in exactly the right order. In the past, writers literally cut and pasted pieces of paper together until they got everything in the right sequence. This process was known as Scrivening. Modern word processors make this easier through the process of cutting and pasting.
Scrivener takes this process to a new level by serving as a word processor, project manager, and organizer for my research. In other words, Scrivener gives me all the resources I would normally have scattered around my desk in one application. My note cards, research documents, and outlines are all right in front of me, giving me the ability to focus all of my attention on writing. Best of all, I don’t have to switch between apps because everything I need is contained within Scrivener — including PDF files, movies, webpages and even sound files. Then when I’m ready to start editing, it gives me the ability to easily rearrange material and prepare it for publication.
Whether you are writing your first research paper or the next great American novel, Scrivener can make you a better writer.
